OVERVIEW

While the National Sun Yat-sen University has been established in 1980, the department of Electrical Engineering is one of the four initial departments, in support of the increasing demand of technical engineers and researchers in Kaohsiung, which is the biggest industrial city in Taiwan. Over the past thirty years, our department has developed complete courses and training programs, covering seven main areas in electrical engineering from Semiconductor Electronics, Control, AI & Network, Power, EM Waves, System-on-Chip, to Biomedical Signal Processing & Instrumentation. A number of important research projects are in progress.
  • Our world-leading massive MIMO antenna system research is acknowledged as one of the top50 in the 50th anniversary of National Science Council. Moreover, magazine Global Views chooses it as a representative in book The elite 100 of new Taiwan.
  • Smart grid, green energy, led lighting and many themes related to power electronics are investigated in our department. We have taken a significant role in the government power plans as well as industrial projects. Therefore, based on our best-average performance, the Ministry of Education granted us as the first university in Taiwan to host the international master's program of electric power engineering (IMEPE).
  • Cloud computing is through collaborative programs with the Institute of Information Industry, to build up the infrastructure, platform and software and set up safe models of a convenient self-access to configurable computing resources.
  • The intelligent robot project focuses on robot path planning, robot football competition and reinforcement learning. The research results have been awarded from the Ministry of Education and National Science Council, and won prizes in the Green Tech Contest.

MISSION

The undergraduate programs of our department emphasizes on a balanced training between theoretical studies and practical lab experiments. Our mission is to introduce undergraduate students into the EE field by providing common core courses, and lead them to have a complete picture of this field, understand basic principles of EE, and search individual research interests. Therefore, the EE undergraduate curriculum is designed to cover seven main areas, which are semiconductor electronics, control, computer engineering, power engineering, EM waves, communication systems, and SoC (System-on-Chip). More than regular courses and laboratory experiments, students are required to take an independent research project during their senior years to integrate underlying principles and translate into practice. Many opportunities of internship are also available, helping students get involved in this industry. In the graduate programs, we incubate graduate students through the intensive research and industrial projects to develop them into competent engineers with a critical thinking based on their solid academic background. They will have the capability of analyzing technical problems, specifying and approaching them precisely and concisely. Most important of all, they will obtain the self-learning ability to pursuit higher performance and benefit our communities. We strongly believe that these students are the future driving force of this industry as well as our country. Involvement in international academic communities is another focus in the graduate programs; we encourage graduate students to publish their research results and participate in international conferences and contests. All performance will be evaluated in accordance with the graduation requirements.
